Project overview

Food Know How is a food waste reduction program that was jointly designed and developed by Yarra City Council and Cultivating Community with funding from the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group.

The original Food Know How program was implemented in Yarra City Council over an 11 month period. Over 500 households, 32 cafes and 3 offices were recruited. A food waste collection scheme was established, with a network of community compost hubs to process food waste from local cafes.

Bin audits were undertaken to measure the percentage of food waste in the waste stream over time. This demonstrated the significant potential of local actions in reducing food waste.

In 2015, building on the success of the original program, Food Know How has been relaunched. The current Food Know How program focuses on households and has expanded to run across 5 council areas – Darebin, Maribyrnong, Moreland, Whittlesea and Yarra.

Food Know How aims to:

  • Provide fun and engaging assistance and support to help members start on their journey to avoid food waste.
  • Recruit and support 1250 households across 5 council areas – Darebin, Maribyrnong, Moreland, Whittlesea and Yarra.
  • Reduce food waste to landfill by 20% in 70% of Food Know How Program participants (an average of 14% across all participants) across a 6 month period.
