Keep food fresh for longer

How we store our food can make a big difference to how long it will last. Here are some easy tips to make your food last longer:

  • Airtight containers with snug fitting lids are perfect for storing items in the fridge, freezer or cupboard.
  • Jars are great for storing flour and rice in the cupboard, as well as storing leftover liquids like salad dressing in the fridge.
  • Keep veggies in the crisper section of your fridge or in airtight containers or bags.
  • Keep fresh herbs in a glass of water to keep their roots hydrated and leaves fresh.

The freezer is great for storing your leftovers, frozen vegetables and extra bread. Here are some tips:

  • If you only eat a small amount of bread, then freeze it when you get home and take out a few slices a couple of hours before you need them.
  • Cook food in batches and store them in airtight containers so that you have meals ready for those evenings when you are too tired to cook.
  • Many fruits such as bananas and berries can be frozen and later cooked, or used in smoothies.
